What is alimony?
Alimony is a legal obligation on a person to provide financial support to their spouse after a divorce. The terms or specifics vary depending on the country and its family law.
When a divorce is granted, either party may ask for post-marital alimony. It is not an absolute right, but may be granted; the amount and terms will vary according to the circumstances.
There´s a difference between alimony and child support: Alimony is generally intended to help the spouse receiving it maintain a similar lifestyle to the one they were accustomed to during the marriage. On the other hand, child support is based only on the existence of a child and the living arrangements of the legal parents.
